As any BMX enthusiast will attest, their bike is more than just a mode of transportation – it's a trusted companion that's been honed to perfection over countless hours of riding. However, even the most well-maintained BMX bike will eventually require some TLC to maintain its performance and extend its lifespan.

In this article, we'll delve into the top 5 essential upgrades you should consider for your trusty steed. From handlebar geometry to wheels and brakes, we'll cover the key components that'll help you upgrade your BMX bike and take your riding to the next level.

BMX Bike Upgrades 101

Before we dive into the top 5 upgrades, it's essential to understand that not all BMX bikes are created equal. The type of riding you do, the terrain you ride on, and your personal preferences will significantly influence the upgrades you need. For example, if you're a freestyle rider, you'll prioritize upgrades that enhance your bike's maneuverability and durability. On the other hand, if you're a downhill enthusiast, you'll focus on upgrades that improve your bike's speed and control.

Upgrade #1: Wheels

Wheels are one of the most critical components of your BMX bike, and upgrading them can significantly impact your riding experience. When choosing new wheels, consider the following factors:

Size: Make sure the wheels are compatible with your bike's frame and fork.

Material: Choose between aluminum, steel, or carbon fiber wheels, each offering unique benefits in terms of weight, durability, and price.

Spokes: Consider upgrading to stainless steel or titanium spokes for added strength and corrosion resistance.

Upgrade #2: Brakes

Effective braking is crucial for maintaining control and safety while riding. Upgrading your brakes can make a significant difference, especially if you ride on rough terrain or at high speeds. When choosing new brakes, consider the following factors:

Type: Decide between rim brakes, disc brakes, or hydraulic brakes, each offering unique benefits in terms of performance, weight, and maintenance.

Calipers: Choose between mechanical or hydraulic calipers, each offering different levels of performance and adjustability.

Levers: Consider upgrading to ergonomic levers for improved control and comfort.

Upgrade #3: Handlebar Geometry

Handlebar geometry plays a significant role in your riding experience, affecting your ability to navigate tight spaces and maintain control. When upgrading your handlebars, consider the following factors:

Rise: Choose between rise or drop handlebars, each offering different levels of comfort and control.

Width: Select a handlebar width that suits your riding style and preferences.

Material: Consider upgrading to aluminum or carbon fiber handlebars for added strength and durability.

Upgrade #4: Saddle and Seatpost

Your saddle and seatpost are critical components that can significantly impact your comfort and riding experience. When upgrading these components, consider the following factors:

Saddle: Choose a saddle that suits your riding style and preferences, taking into account factors like cushioning, width, and material.

Seatpost: Select a seatpost that's compatible with your bike's frame and offers the right level of stiffness and durability.

Upgrade #5: Frame and Fork

Finally, upgrading your frame and fork can significantly impact your riding experience, offering improved performance, durability, and style. When choosing new components, consider the following factors:

Material: Choose between steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber frames and forks, each offering unique benefits in terms of weight, durability, and price.

Geometry: Select a frame and fork geometry that suits your riding style and preferences, taking into account factors like wheelbase, head tube angle, and seat tube angle.

If you're looking for alternative products to consider, here are a few options

Remember to consider factors like size, material, and compatibility when choosing new wheels, brakes, handlebars, saddles, seatposts, frames, and forks. By investing in the right upgrades, you'll be able to take your riding to the next level and enjoy a more comfortable, safe, and enjoyable experience.

Final Verdict

In conclusion, upgrading your BMX bike is a critical aspect of maintaining its performance and extending its lifespan. By prioritizing the right components, you'll be able to enhance your riding experience and take your skills to new heights. Agreed on all points. This is the reason why I'm building up a new bike. My current bike, which is a complete, feels cheap and I have a gut feeling if I were to push it as hard as I used to, something will give in. Like Brant said, completes are great for new riders and young people but the bikes almost has a limit in longevity with the owner's progress. Even back in the late 90's I recall my friend and I, we both had entry level race bikes and the high tensile steel couldn't handle the abuse we were giving in the trails. I've built custom bikes after and its true, I never had to worry about the strength of parts, and some even transferring through multiple builds.

the only thing in this video that I've a actually had to replace is my frame it was a gt performer 20.5 top tube 13 chain stay and my new frame is a cult shorty 20.5 top tube and a 13 chain stay. but i would love to change my slightly bent forks soon plus i need something that isn't a starnut compression.

Not only skipped over a 3 piece crank, which I suppose is understandable as it's somewhat of a given, but also their available (unsurprisingly) and far better as chromoly.
