As I stepped out of my hotel in Istanbul, the aroma of sizzling meat and freshly baked bread wafted through the air, teasing my senses and building my anticipation for a day of culinary exploration. My journey took me to the bustling streets of Beşiktaş, where I discovered a hidden gem of a restaurant serving the most delectable Turkish breakfast. From there, I embarked on a gastronomic adventure that would take me to the Asian side of Istanbul, where the vibrant colors and enticing aromas of Kadiköy Market awaited.
Turkish Breakfast: A Delicious Start
My day began at Çakmak Kahvaltı Salonu, a cozy restaurant in Beşiktaş that serves an impressive spread of traditional Turkish breakfast dishes. The moment I walked in, I was greeted by the warm and welcoming staff, who presented me with a steaming plate of eggs, beef, and butter. The combination of flavors and textures was nothing short of delightful, and I savored every bite of the dish. The side dishes, which included a medley of fresh vegetables and cheeses, added a delightful contrast to the rich flavors of the main course. The total price for this delectable meal was a mere 29 Turkish Lira, or approximately $9.73, making it an excellent value for the quality and quantity of food served.
A Ferry Ride to Kadiköy Market
After fueling up on a delicious breakfast, I boarded a ferry that would take me across the Bosphorus to the Asian side of Istanbul. The views of the city from the ferry were simply breathtaking, with the stunning mosques and palaces of the European side giving way to the vibrant colors and bustling streets of Kadiköy. As I stepped off the ferry, I was immediately struck by the vibrant atmosphere of the market, which was filled with an incredible array of fresh produce, seafood, and local specialties.
Seafood at Balıkçı Lokantası Restaurant
One of the highlights of my day was a visit to Balıkçı Lokantası Restaurant, a family-run seafood establishment that serves up some of the freshest and most delicious seafood in Istanbul. The owners were warm and welcoming, and they presented me with a plate of hamsi (anchovies) and Black Sea salmon braised in olive oil and butter. The flavors were nothing short of sublime, and I was impressed by the care and attention that went into preparing each dish. This meal was one of the highlights of my trip to Istanbul, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic seafood experience.
Turkish Ice Cream: A Sweet Treat
After spending some time exploring the Asian side of Istanbul, I boarded a ferry back to the European side and made my way to Istiklal Street, where I stopped to indulge in a sweet treat: Turkish ice cream. The vendors on this street are known for their skill in playing tricks on their customers, and I was no exception. As I watched in amazement, the vendor expertly manipulated the ice cream into a series of intricate shapes and designs, all while keeping a straight face and a twinkle in his eye. This was a fun and lighthearted way to cap off my day of culinary exploration.
The Best Kebab I've Ever Had
My final meal of the day was at Zübeyir Ocakbaşı Restaurant, a popular spot for traditional Turkish kebabs. The restaurant was bustling with activity, with the chefs expertly grilling meats and vegetables over an open flame. I ordered the kebab, which was cooked to perfection and served with a side of delicious spices and herbs. This was the best kebab I've ever had, and I was impressed by the care and attention that went into preparing each dish. The total price for this meal was 100 Turkish Lira, or approximately $33.55, making it a relatively affordable option for the quality and quantity of food served.

PositiveHi Mark. Just went to Zubeyir's. It was FANTASTIC. Anyone from the UK visiting to Istanbul I will highly recommend to get to Zubeyir's and I can personally say it is the best you can get in Istanbul. Forget the backstreets and alleyways which are a scam in Istanbul. This one is what I was expecting and Zubeyir beats them hands down

Negative25:04 An "ocakbaşı" is basically a kebab restaurant that serves alcohol, mainly rakı. Therefore, these places are generally more upscale and expensive compared to the typical kebab shops you find on the street. The concept is similar to that of a meyhane (or tavern) if you've been to one in Turkey, so people go there to drink rakı with kebab and chat for hours. Usually you'll need to make a reservation for the evening.
